Il film parla della battaglia avvenuta nel 480 a.C., detta delle Termopili. In quell'occasione Leonida, utilizzando 300 soldati scelti fra quelli della sua personale guardia, tenne testa all'imponente esercito persiano al servizio del re Serse.
