Colorado, anni Settanta. Ron Stallworth entra nel Dipartimento di polizia di Denver dopo la laurea. Fra i suoi primi incarichi c'è quello di infiltrarsi ad un incontro con il leader afroamericano Stokey Carmichael, dove Ron si imbatte in Patrice, una sorta di Angela Davis organizzatrice dell'evento e convinta sostenitrice del movimento di autoaffermazione black. È un risveglio per il giovane uomo che fino a quel momento sembrava non aver prestato troppa attenzione alla propria appartenenza razziale, nè troppo valore al proprio background etnico.
