Nel 2010 a Lahore, mentre imperversano le manifestazioni studentesche, un giovane pakistano, il professor Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) viene intervistato dal giornalista americano Bobby Lincoln (Liev Schreiber). Changez, che ha studiato a Princeton attratto dal sogno americano, racconta a Lincoln il suo passato di brillante analista finanziario a Wall Street, del suo mentore, Jim Cross (Kiefer Sutherland) e della bellissima, sofisticata Erica (Kate Hudson), con la quale si preparava a condividere il futuro. Ma dopo l’11 settembre, guardato come potenziale terrorista comincia a interrogarsi sulla propria identità, sui fondamentalismi occidentali e orientali e sulla necessità di un “sogno pakistano”.
