Lo scrittore Stephen Elliott, da diverso tempo in crisi creativa, viene affascinato dal processo del momento, nel quale l’imputato, un tranquillo padre di famiglia, è accusato del brutale omicidio della moglie, introvabile da alcune settimane. Questo caso riporta inoltre lo scrittore ai tempi della sua tormentata adolescenza e al burrascoso rapporto col genitore, reo secondo lui di averlo abbandonato dopo la morte della madre per costruirsi una nuova famiglia. L’unica certezza nella vita di Stephen sembra essere costituita dalla presenza della nuova fidanzata Lana, personaggio anch’esso complesso reduce da difficili esperienze. Ma proprio quando tutto sembra procedere per il meglio, il padre di Stephen, Neil, si rifà vivo dopo anni costringendolo a venire a patti con il proprio passato.
