Bruno "King of the Road" vive nel suo camion con cui gira per paesi e cittadine della RFT a riparare proiettori. Robert "Kamikaze" è, invece, uno psicolinguista che si è appena separato dalla moglie durante un viaggio in Italia. Dall'incontro casuale tra questi due "amleti tedeschi che viaggiano nel paese dell'anima", dalla loro temporanea amicizia e dal loro tour lungo il confine tra le Germanie divise, nasce un road movie emozionante che ha incantato un'intera generazione.
