Thelma è una timida ragazza, proveniente da una famiglia molto cattolica, che lascia la campagna per trasferirsi a Oslo per intraprendere gli studi universitari. Un giorno, mentre si trova in biblioteca, viene colta da un attacco epilettico e viene soccorsa dalla studentessa Anja. Tra le due ragazze si instaura una forte amicizia che in seguito diventa attrazione, che però Thelma tenta di respingere a causa della sua educazione religiosa. Gli attacchi epilettici di Thelma diventano sempre più frequenti e sembrano coinvolgere l'ambiente circostante, in particolare gli uccelli, che impazziscono quando Thelma sta male.
