E' la storia vera del premio Nobel John Forbes Nash Jr, genio della matematica che ha formulato (tra le altre) la nota teoria dei giochi. Nash deve combattere contro la schizofrenia. La malattia mentale che afflige il protagonista rischia di distruggere completamente la vita familiare e professionale del "misterioso genio della Virginia Occidentale". Soprattutto grazie alla forza e all'amore della moglie Alicia, Nash riesce a convivere con la sua malattia e a non esserne sconfitto. Nel 1994 Nash vince il nobel per l'economia.
