Nel novembre 1974, in una piccola città americana, il giovane Ronald DeFeo Jr. ammazza a fucilate i genitori e i suoi quattro fratelli nella loro casa in riva al fiume. Arrestato e condannato, in tribunale afferma d'essere stato spinto a uccidere da voci misteriose.
