Il giovane Cesare Cardinali, titolare a New York di una fiorente rappresentanza di automobili, nel passato, mentre era sul punto di essere linciato per aver ucciso un uomo, fu salvato da Emilio Matteo, un grosso esponente della mafia americana. Ora costui pretende che Cesare in cambio, elimini un pericoloso testimone, sul quale la polizia fa affidamento per riuscire finalmente a incriminarlo. Eseguito l'incarico, ritenendo di aver pagato il suo debito, Cesare decide di troncare ogni rapporto con la mafia.
