Peter è un ragazzo apatico, svogliato, incapace di perseguire uno scopo nella vita: un'amica alla quale era simpatico, stanca del suo torpore, si è allontanata da lui. Il padre, invece, ritenendolo destinato a realizzare grandi cose, riesce a farlo assumere i un supermercato con il compito di sorvegliare che i clienti non si impossessino furtivamente della merce esposta. Ma Peter, cui il padre aveva fatto balenare l'idea di diventare un giorno direttore del supermercato, si rivela ben presto inadatto anche alle più semplici mansioni. Il padre, tuttavia, non dà troppa importanza a quel fallimento e lo sprona a fare il muratore, sicuro che riuscirà a diventare un poco tempo un apprezzato capomastro.
