Seung-geun è un un uomo economicamente sul lastrico, appena uscito da una relazione sentimentale, che tenta di suicidarsi gettandosi da un ponte di Seoul sul fiume Han. Finisce però su un isolotto disabitato. Non sapendo nuotare e avendo la batteria del cellulare scarica non può lasciare l'isola. Dopo le prime difficoltà nel trovare il cibo Seung-geun riesce a coltivare un piccolo campo di mais. L'unica persona ad accorgersi di lui è Jung-yeon, una ragazza hikikomori che vive segregata nella sua stanza. I due cominciano a comunicare, in inglese, tramite messaggi all'interno di bottiglie di vetro e frasi scritte sulla sabbia.
