Il giovane Mike Rogers, autista da noleggio, incontra una danarosa ragazza americana, Ellie, della quale si innamora, ricambiato. I due si sposano e aperto un negozio di antiquariato, vanno a vivere in una splendida villa. Un giorno però, mentre Mike è ad un'asta per comprare un regalo alla moglie, viene raggiunto da una grave notizia: Ellie è scomparsa.
