Creata da Kevin Williamson nel 1998, è una serie semi-autobiografica, essendo basata su una piccola città immaginaria, Capeside, come quella in cui visse l'adolescenza Williamson. E' stata girata a Wilmington (North Carolina) e su una baia, due case separate da un fiume, nelle quali vivono rispettivamente Dawson e Joey Potter. Al secondo anno di liceo, i due, insieme agli amici Pacey Witter e Jen Lindley, fanno i conti con l'adolescenza. Dawson's Creek è diventata una serie di ispirazione per gli adolescenti perché parla di cose importanti per la loro scoperta della vita.
