Francia, XVII secolo. A Loudun, padre Grandier (Oliver Reed) conduce una vita dissoluta, lontana dal rigore impostogli dall'abito talare. Bello e carismatico, intrattiene segrete relazioni con alcune donne suscitando l'eccitazione della badessa Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave), entrata in convento per l'impossibilità a trovare marito.
