Il giovane Peter Houseman, professore in un'università privata, è uno scienziato che sta per raggiungere importanti risultati nei suoi studi sul DNA. L'invidia dei colleghi, la burocrazia ed altri ostacoli inducono Peter a testare su se stesso il siero contenente il DNA modificato da lui creato. Dopo un primo momento in cui sembra che l'esperimento abbia prodotto buoni risultati, Peter comincia a notare dei cambiamenti non solo fisici, ma anche caratteriali. Lo scienziato attraverserà una fase di invecchiamento precoce che lo renderà molto debole. Ma questo è solamente l'inizio della reale metamorfosi che subirà Peter, il quale diventerà un mostro folle e sanguinario che comincerà a mietere vittime.
