1977, una storia vera: sono passati tre anni da quando Richard Nixon, sull'onda dello scandalo Watergate, ha lasciato la Casa bianca, quando David Frost, un anchorman inglese che non gode di grande credito negli States, offre una grossa somma all'ex presidente per realizzare un ciclo di quattro interviste. Si tratta di un'occasione per entrambi: Nixon vuole essere rivalutato, dimostrare che è stato un grande statista, al di là di quelli che considera piccoli errori; Frost vuole raggiungere il successo in America (dopo esserne rimasto scottato anni prima) e sa che se riuscirà a mettere in difficoltà il suo ospite si guadagnerà l'attenzione del mondo.
