Secondo un'antica profezia, Anton, ucciderà il fratello gemello Gregor nella Stanza Nera del castello di famiglia. Anton torna a casa dopo dieci anni di esilio e trova Gregor divenuto nel frattempo barone. Gregor è detestato dai sudditi per il suo atteggiamento dispotico ed un giorno la popolazione insorge per cacciarlo via.
