La vita di Samuel A. Mudd, il medico che curò John Wilkes Booth, ignaro che il ferito era l’assassino di Lincoln. Processato e condannato all’ergastolo per complicità, venne deportato in un bagno penale, ma il suo eroico comportamento durante un’epidemia di febbre gialla gli valse la riapertura del caso e la completa riabilitazione. In questo film Ford esalta il mito di Lincoln, salvatore e padre della patria, e lo trasferisce nella figura del dottor Mudd, muovendo nel contempo un feroce attacco alla giustizia nordista ed esaltando le virtù del Sud.
