Nell'Inghilterra di fine '800, il dottor Gordon Ramsey è stato condannato a morte nel carcere di Newgate per un omicidio che non ha commesso. Il dottor Cadman, suo antico maestro, riesce tuttavia a salvarlo somministrandogli una droga - il sonno nero - che provoca una morte apparente.
