Invitato a Reims per restaurare dei quadri di proprietà della famosa cattedrale, il pittore romano Antonio Berti segue l'amico Robert Maurisson e inizia il proprio lavoro avvalendosi di una giovane modella. Segue un efferato delitto: la modella Cathy viene violentata e strangolata. Il colpevole è Maurisson ma per una serie di equivoci viene incolpato Antonio che finirà in carcere per anni alla soglia della ghigliottina.
