1914. Mentre l’Europa è sull’orlo della guerra, in un castello danese Edith, una baronessina invalida s’innamora del tenente Anton, campione di cortesia, arruolatosi per ristorare l’onore familiare. I compagni d’armi malignano, ma l’oscuro barone, benedice la futura unione, nella speranza di una cura che rimetta la figliola sulle gambe.
