Nel 1944 Geiger, un soldato tedesco detenuto nel campo di prigionia di Bremen viene accusato del brutale omicidio del dottor Hansen. Di contro ai pregiudizi dei cittadini l'avvocato Herman Cobb viene costretto a sostenerne la difesa nel processo che potrebbe condannare il prigioniero a morte. Del resto le prove contro l'uomo sono schiaccianti e lo stesso Cobb non crede nella sua innocenza. Finchè nuovi fatti vengono alla luce.
