Su incarico della rivista Life, il giovane fotografo Dennis Stock segue da vicino l’astro nascente James Dean, con l’obiettivo di realizzare un servizio che non sia la solita agiografia pubblicitaria. Ma quando non è apertamente riluttante, Jimmy è caotico e umorale, e ha la tendenza a non prendere mai niente sul serio. Un giorno, i due lasciano i ritmi frenetici di New York e iniziano un viaggio verso la fattoria dell’Indiana in cui Jimmy è cresciuto. Gradualmente tra i due giovani nasce un’inattesa amicizia.
