Il film s’ispira a un personaggio storico del West: il bandito Black Bart, detto il poeta, che rapinò molte diligenze senza mai uccidere nessuno e lasciando poi sempre un foglietto su cui erano vergati alcuni rozzi versi. Sono qui descritti gli sforzi di Jim Wylie, ex giocatore professionista, per stanare il misterioso personaggio. Il film ispirò una lunga serie televisiva.
