La storia ripercorre la carriera di Marjorie, cantante lirica australiana, il suo successo su due continenti, e il suo matrimonio col medico americano Thomas King. Durante il tour in Sud America nel 1941, Lawrence è colpito dalla poliomielite, che termina non solo bruscamente la sua carriera, ma per breve tempo la priva della voglia di vivere. Grazie alle cure amorevoli del marito, e alla sua pazienza, la cantante riuscì a riprendersi dalla malattia, ne superò il trauma e tornò sulle scene.
