East End di Londra in una tipica domenica piovosa: Tommy Swann (John McCallum) evade di prigione dopo dieci anni e cerca rifugio in casa dell'ex amante Rose (Googie Withers), ormai sposata col mite vedovo George Sandigate (Edward Chapman), le cui due figlie sognano una nuova vita: Vi (Susan Shaw) spera nelle promesse di un musicista sposato (Sydney Tafler) mentre Doris (Patricia Plunkett) lavora per il malavitoso Lou (John Slater).
