Nato a Gubbio nel giugno 1422, fu cultore del bello, umanista e mecenate capace di trasformare la corte di Urbino in un centro culturale attorno a cui ruotarono artisti e letterati. Uomo di fede incrollabile, brillò per la rapida carriera militare e per l'abilità politica. Oltre ad essere condottiero e statista, Federico mostrò di possedere anche grande umanità, interessandosi ai bisogni della gente e fondando il proprio governo sull'amore per i sudditi.
