Nella cittadina di Haddan (New England) ha sede un'esclusiva scuola privata. Insegnanti e studenti non hanno contatti con gli abitanti del paese, ma la scuola si trova costretta ad aprire le porte al mondo esterno quando viene rinvenuto il cadavere di uno studente nel fiume che scorre nelle sue vicinanze. Tutto sembra indicare che si tratti di un suicidio, ma il poliziotto Abel Grey continuerà a indagare seguendo degli indizi che sembrano essere stati lasciati da presenze soprannaturali.
