A Carlstadt, il professor Callistratus, direttore di un sanatorio criminale, costringe il dottor John Pierre, prigioniero innocente, a collaborare nella sperimentazione sui gruppi sanguigni in vista di un mai tentato trapianto di cuore artificiale. Madeleine, sospettando che il fidanzato Pierre non sia morto come le si vuole far credere, si fa assumere nell'istituto, ma, scoperta da Callistratus, è rinchiusa in una cripta per essere sottoposta agli esperimenti. Non potendo più contare sulla fedeltà del medico, il professore richiude anche lui e, convinto che non possa più recargli danno, gli confida il suo segreto.
