Charlie St.Cloud è un appassionato di competizioni in barca a vela a cui fa partecipare anche il fratellino Sam con cui ha un ottimo rapporto. Una sera però, mentre lo ha in custodia, sono entrambi vittime di un incidente stradale. Sam muore mentre Charlie sopravvive miracolosamente.
