A Parigi, il giovane stravagante Fred, dopo essere stato inviato ad una festa di compleanno da Helena, bella e insoddisfatta moglie di un ricco uomo politico, ruba dei documenti compromettenti dalla cassaforte della donna. Il ragazzo si rifugia nella metropolitana, abitata da strani personaggi, musicisti, poeti, artisti di ogni genere. Lui vuole rivedere Helena di cui si è innamorato; le telefona e le offre i documenti in cambio di denaro. La donna accetta. Il mondo irreale e frenetico della sotterranea popolato dagli strani amici del ragazzo la attrae in maniera irrefrenabile.
