Nel 1917 un treno piombato attraversa l'Europa in guerra, da Zurigo a Pietrogrado. A bordo l'esule Vladimir Lenin sospeso tra due viaggi, quello verso la Storia dello statista chiamato a deporre lo Zar e quello di un uomo in viaggio verso il proprio destino insieme alla moglie, all'amante e ai più stretti collaboratori.
