Art Blakey nel 1960 siglava un classico dello hard bop con The Big Beat in cui era protagonista una delle più straordinarie formazioni della lunga storia dei Jazz Messengers con il leggendario batterista alla testa del quintetto completato da Lee Morgan alla tromba, Wayne Shorter al sax tenore, Bobby Timmons al piano e Jymie Merritt al contrabbasso. Lalbum è noto anche per una versione epocale el classico Dat Dere, siglato da Timmons.
