Donald Byrd nel 1975 con l'album Places and Spaces raggiungeva il successo, anche grazie a due successi da juke box come I singoli Wind Parade e Dominoes: era il culmine della fase fusion del poliedrico (e prolifico) trombettista. Era anche il suo quinto album ad essere prodotto da un visionario come Larry Mizell, nonché il penultimo firmato da Byrd per la Blue Note, l'etichetta con la quale aveva inciso fin dal 1958 lasciando sui solchi la storia della sua evoluzione dal più puro bop ai pionieristici primo passi verso la fusion e il R&B.
