COLTRANE LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD registrato fra il 2 ed il 3 novembre del 1961 è un album che rappresenta una doppia novità per John Coltrane: non solo si tratta del primo album live della sua carriera, ma segna anche il debutto discografico della formazione che passerà alla storia con il nome di Classic Quartet. Come è noto, McCoy Tyner al piano ed Elvin Jones alla batteria erano già al fianco di Trane da due anni, ma queste storiche serate testimoniano l'arrivo di Jimmy Garrison al contrabbasso: un laboratorio destinato a durare quattro intensi anni. Tre soli lunghi brani: il maestoso Spiritual (in cui si aggiunge nell'esposizione del tema il clarinetto basso di Eric Dolphy), lo standard Softly as in a Morning Sunrise e la cavalcata finale di Chasin the Trane, una maratona blues passata alla storia. Nel 1961 Coltrane travolgeva il pubblico, e per nostra fortuna la Impulse! aveva allestito questa registrazione. E questa ne è la migliore versione in vinile.
