Robert Glasper aveva debuttato gia due anni prima su Blue Note con l?album Canvas, che aveva segnalato l?arrivo di una nuova voce nel pianismo jazz. Due anni dopo, nel 2007, In My Element consolidava la sua fama di musicista in grado di traghettare la musica verso nuovi approdi. Con il contributo di Vicente Archer al contrabbasso e di Damion Reid alla batteria, Glasper espandeva la tavolozza attingendo tanto al passato (le radici gospel) quanto al presente (lo hip hop).
