Nato nel 1926 ad Hamlet, nella Carolina del Nord, Coltrane è stato protagonista dellevoluzione del jazz del suo tempo passando dal bebop e hard bop dell'inizio della sua carriera, al jazz modale e al free jazz. Ha raggiunto la notorietà come membro del Miles Davis Quintet e del Thelonious Monk Quartet, e nel 1960 ha iniziato la sua carriera come leader formando il suo sublime quartetto. Rimane ancora oggi uno dei sassofonisti più influenti nella storia della musica. Questo cofanetto riunisce tre dei suoi album più importanti: Blue Train (1957), Giant Steps (1959) e Ballads (1962).
