"Sketches of Spain" rappresenta il terzo lavoro frutto della collaborazione di Miles Davis e Gil Evans (i loro lavori precedenti erano "Miles Ahead" del 1957 e "Porgy and Bess" del 1958). Prima di realizzare questo album, Miles aveva appena sciolto il suo sestetto con John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers e Jimmy Cobb, con cui aveva inciso lalbum storico Kind of Blue a metà del 1959. Su quellalbum, Davis aveva incluso "Flamenco Sketches", un brano dispirazione spagnola che in un certo senso ha anticipato la realizzazione dellalbum qui riproposto. Come bonus track è stato aggiunto il brano "Song of Our Country", lunica composizione di Evans realizzata per "Sketches of Spain" che non era stata inclusa nellalbum originale.
