Sketches of Spain rappresenta il terzo lavoro frutto della collaborazione di Miles Davis e Gil Evans (i loro lavori precedenti erano Miles Ahead del 1957 e Porgy and Bess del 1958). Prima di realizzare questo album, Miles aveva appena sciolto il suo sestetto con John Coltrane, Julian Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers e Jimmy Cobb, con cui aveva inciso lalbum storico Kind of Blue a metà del 1959. Su quellalbum, Davis aveva incluso Flamenco Sketches, un brano dispirazione spagnola che in un certo senso ha anticipato la realizzazione dellalbum qui riproposto. Come bonus track è stato aggiunto il brano Song of Our Country, lunica composizione di Evans realizzata per Sketches of Spain che non era stata inclusa nellalbum originale.
