Ci sono una serie di ragioni per cui Money Jungle è considerata una registrazione jazz unica. Prima di tutto, l'album si distingue per la sua superba qualità musicale. Segna anche una sessione di trio molto rara nella discografia di Duke Ellington. Inoltre lalbum è conosciuto per essere l'unica vera collaborazione registrata di Duke con due geni del jazz molto più giovani: Charles Mingus e Max Roach. Ellington incluse per un breve periodo Roach e Mingus nella sua band all'inizio degli anni Cinquanta. La maggior parte del repertorio dellalbum è stato scritto appositamente per la sessione, mentre le uniche vecchie melodie che hanno registrato sono state Warm Valley, Caravan e Solitude.
