Il biennio 1956-57 è stato un periodo molto impegnativo per Billie Holiday. In quel periodo la cantante era sotto contratto con Norman Granz che, dopo la pubblicazione della sua autobiografia Lady Sings the Blues, le organizzò una sessione in studio con Ben Webster al sax tenore, Harry "Sweets" Edison alla tromba, Jimmy Rowles piano, Barney Kessel alla chiatarra, Red Mitchell al basso e Alvin Stoller alla batteria, da cui nacque lomonimo album. Nel 1957 la cantante si ritrovò nuovamente a registrare con la stessa formazione per dar vita a Songs For Distingué Lovers.
