Pubblicato a luglio del 1996, Chaos and Disorder arrivò con un rarodisclaimer scritto da Prince (allora noto come il "Love Symbol"):"Originariamente destinato solo a uso privato, questa raccolta serve comeultimo materiale inedito registrato da 'The Artist' per la Warner Bros. Larelazione controversa di Prince con l'etichetta era nel suo momento piùcruciale e questo disco - ben 39 minuti di chitarra e melodie pop semplici maavvincenti - era l'anello finale della catena che gli impediva di pubblicare lamusica come voleva. "Qualcuno mi ha detto che Van Halen ha fatto il suoprimo disco in una settimana" commentò Prince al Los Angeles Timessulla rapida creazione dell'album.
